the sexist feminists

On Wednesday I went to a radical feminist meeting, several points were made that I totally agree with:

  1. Fashion works against women turning them into objects of consumerisation and demeaning their collective personalities by emphasising useless features such as their choice of lipstick.
  2. Raising the glass ceiling is pointless if there are many women still languishing in the cellar. Women do not need to ascend a male-dominated business hierarchy, the hierarchy itself must be destroyed. Once again I quote the french student protesters “No replastering, the structure is rotten”.
  3. Children are brainwashed with the idea that to be beautiful is to be successful. It is an abomination that some young girls aspire to be the wives of footballers.
  4. Women have the right to wear what they want without repression from society. This works both from the perspective of women being forced to cover up and women being forced to wear more revealing clothing.
  5. Women are not oppressed because they are biologically inferior or simply because they are different. They are oppressed because it benefits the ruling classes to do so.

And here’s the bit I didn’t agree with: when a man in the audience asked a question about how men and women were equal in their oppression he was promptly ignored. They seemed to have misunderstood the fact that the men in the audience are on their side, in highlighting questions from women and marginalising those from men they were discriminating according to gender. In attacking men as a group they promote sexism and become just as bad as the people they oppose.

I’ll expand upon this, there’s lots of help for teenage mothers because they get lots of media attention. Not so much help is offered to teenage fathers, in fact as far as the media is concerned they don’t exist.
In raising money for breast cancer women do a race for life fun run through town, men are banned from taking part in this run. I cry sexism. Men do have their own version for this which attempts to bring the issue of prostate cancer into light by getting men to grow moustaches, it’s just as sexist but not as well known.
