Why I’m a non-partisan socialist

One of the downsides of the Stop The War national  march was talking to a comrade at the SWP stall who tried to get me to join the party. This isn’t a criticism of that guy, he was just recruiting for his organisation. The SWP needs members and who better than myself who clearly believes in socialism and has no current affiliations with any party. Great.

Except for the fact that as a broad rule I don’t want to join any party. I’m non-partisan. I have good reasons for this, I’m still learning about politics and I go to various talks from a broad spectrum of parties. Constraining oneself to a single party is like putting blinkers on one’s eyes by only seeing their opinion. It’s also more difficult to go to party meetings if one is a member of a different party, one can be accused of entryism. My other reason is that I believe in a united left, joining one single party would exclude supporting all other parties.

If anyone’s interested in reading the notes from the town planning talk I did a few weeks ago, I scanned them in:

I liked doing that talk, it made me feel like a clever person who gives talks and lectures and people from school turned up to listen. I’m considering preparing a talk on piracy and how it should be adopted by the left; that or I’ll write a post about it.
