This post is about video editing, it may be boring for some people, but bear with me. I have encountered some problems with editing MP4 files in the H.264 video format and AAC audio format from my Flip camcorder. These problems occur on the suite I use: Serif MoviePlus X3
- Takes epic amounts of processing power, the CPU stays between 85 and 100% for most of the time I’m editing which makes it really annoying to do anything else at the same time.
- Some clips lose sound halfway through.
- The last 3 frames of some clips turn black for no explained reason.
- Sometimes the editor refuses to recognize the codec. Despite it already being used for all the other clips. This is not consistent and it cold stop recognizing the codec of any clip at any time.
- Small changes in the frame rate (NTSC 29.97 fps to it’s original 30 fps) which could explain number 3.
The DivX converter locks the default aspect ratio of it’s HD 720p profile at 2.35:1 (the aspect ratio used in cinemas) resulting in a resolution of 1280 x 544 and to save the hassle of manually changing resolution back to 1280 x 720 I now use Dr. DivX
I’ll also have a writeup of what it’s like to edit with the school’s Macs on my Media Studies blog later on.
My video of the Brighton protest has been up for at least a week now in the Video Archive so feel free to head on over there and give it a look.
I’m going to the Stop the War National March tomorrow and I’ll bring my camcorder along to that too.
