Old rules live on

In writing this I’m setting out with the statement that I actually really like Sixth-Form. But. I was promised a completely relaxed work ethic, in part due to the fact that I don’t actually have to be there. What I have found is not what I expected. It’s not unfair to say that the teachers are being unnecessarily repressive. An example is that anyone late for lessons or assembly is put in detention. Another example is that when I dismissed a piece of General Studies homework I was faced with a conduct card. For those who don’t know a conduct card is a piece of paper which details the student’s “breach of conduct”.

What the school has failed to understand is that I didn’t do the homework for a subject I didn’t want to take. I’m not motivated to do it. The homework was too easy, I let it go. When we entered Sixth-Form the teachers said we’d need time to adjust to acting like adults. That I am threatened with sanctions in a class I am forced to attend does not give me the impression of being treated like an adult. What the teachers omitted was that they also need time to adjust.

Detentions for students who come in late are pointless if attending classes is not compulsory. Some teachers seem to have grasped this and moved on, some cannot bear to treat us like we deserve and persist in enforcing old rules.

End of Rant.
