A note from General Studies was that when the Metropolitan Police force was formed in 1829 their uniform was chosen so that it would not resemble that of a soldier. They were meant to be servants of the people, approachable, friendly. British Bobbies do by and large have a reputation for being the nicest police force in the world. They carried no guns and their only other equipment was a whistle, a notebook and a truncheon. 170 years later here’s what they’ve grown into:

They’re big boys now, even girls. Daddy decided that the bad men in turbans might come home so now they’ve got new toys to play with which make bang noises and keep them amused. Maybe one day they’ll grow up into real men and remember what granddaddy said about being servants of the people. They might even throw away their old toys because it’s boring when there aren’t any bad men around.

Surely it is good to enforce the law strongly? Protecting the people is the most important thing and using any means neccesary to do so is the best way forward in my mind.

Of course it’s important to protect the people. My argument is that guns are built to kill people, if people are carrying guns that means they foresee using them at some point. However, the risk of me or you being killed in a terrorist attack is so incredibly low I’m able to dimiss it, guns aren’t necessary.

You see Pierre, the scope of your judgement is unfortunately narrow: armed response teams tackle more than just terrorism, for example gun crime. If a criminal has a gun, no amount of notepads, whistles, and frienliness is going to stop them if intent on killing someone.
The US system of every cop carrying a gun is definately flawed; however a system with the police carrying no guns? The British system is a fair compramise.
As you stated above, guns are made to kill people; however if one person shall kill 30 would their life not be a justified loss? It is utilitarian i admit, and you may not agree, but you should definately consider it.

Tom, I think that police carrying guns is a great thing as long as they use them correctly, which they won’t. I hate to use Michael Moore of all people to back me up in my arguement but I’m afriad I shall.
